The question at hand is whether a born-again Christian can be owned by anyone other than Christ. It is important to specify “Born Again Christian” and not just “Christians,” as not all Christians are born again and alive unto God; many are still spiritually dead despite claiming to be Christians.
If we define possession as complete ownership of a person, particularly the spirit-man, then the answer is no – a born-again Christian cannot be possessed because their spirit-man is filled, joined, and completely owned by the Holy Spirit after rebirth. However, if we consider possession in a specific area, then yes, a born-again Christian can be possessed or demonized by the devil in a particular area of their mind or body, as the body was not saved at rebirth and the mind needs to be constantly renewed to be “saved.” On the other hand, professing “Christians” who are not born-again can be completely possessed.
Every born-again Christian experiences instant healing and deliverance at the moment of new birth. When you are reborn, you are immediately transferred from the kingdom of darkness to the Kingdom of Light, so deliverance and healing have already occurred in your spirit. However, some individuals may still have lingering demons in their lives that did not leave at the time of conversion, and this issue must be addressed with truth. Sometimes, demons need to be cast out, while other times the mind needs to be liberated from its fallen state and renewed in knowledge (Ephesians 4:23). Therefore, healing and deliverance can be either instant or a continuous process through the reception of truth and the application of God’s truth.
Born-again Christians can be influenced or oppressed in their mind or body, but they cannot be possessed in their spirit. It is possible to cast out demons from a born-again Christian after they have been saved. When a born-again Christian receives Christ and reconnect with God, they cannot be possessed in their spirit because the Holy Spirit comes into them, claiming them back and making their spirit one with God (1 Corinthians 6:17). This is why no one can snatch a born-again Christian from the hands of Jesus (John 10:29); Jesus Christ completely owns them.
Every born-again Christian should undergo a process of deliverance from the negative influences and behaviors they engaged in before their salvation. From this perspective, a born-again Christian can be influenced or oppressed by a demon in a specific area of their life if they give in to the devil or willingly engage in wicked acts. This can manifest as the spirit of anger or other negative behaviors. However, it is important to remember that their spirit is owned by Jesus and is free. Therefore, it is crucial for Christians to constantly renew their minds and remain vigilant in the battle against negative influences.
The word of God, empowered by God’s anointing, can heal, transform, deliver, and set free from chains, shackles, yokes, and bondages.
‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’
Says the Lord of hosts.
